Enamel is porous, so anything strongly coloured that passes over it year after year leaves a mark. In-clinic whitening reaches deeper than everyday toothpaste and lifts both surface and mid-depth discolouration.

• Coffee and tea. Tannins and colour pigments bind to the surface of the enamel and leave a yellowish or brownish tone, and hot drinks open the pores further.

It is not suitable if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, since the safety of whitening products during pregnancy has not been fully established, and we advise against it under the age of 18 because teeth and enamel are still developing. Crowns, veneers and fillings are made of materials that do not change colour, so they stay as they are, which is worth knowing if you have visible restorations at the front.
